The concept for this collection ocurred to me in early 2023, as I looked forward to composing my first new music in almost twenty years. It began with a simple guitar meandering, which unlocked my imagination and somehow evolved into the first jam. After ‘Mercurial’ was complete, I looked inward to try and grasp where this music had originated. The phrase ‘on a flight of fancy’ came to mind, and it seemed to accurately depict the creative journey I had been a part of. So I went with ‘Flights Of Fancy’ as the concept for the upcoming collection, and decided to book a few more ‘flights’. Over the next 3½ years, ten musical works resulted from these journeys. Each piece started with a single idea, vision, scenario or musical phrase...then imagination took over, and the soundscapes unfolded from there. I quickly discovered that my roles in the process were to make good sonic choices and stay out of the way as the music happened. The first five of these became the ‘Today’ album, and the last five became the ‘Beyond’ collection. In the meantime, while going through some old tapes, I came across five pieces from the past (circa 1982-1995) that were conceived and recorded in much the same fashion. These jams were released as the ‘Yesterday’ album. And though the quality of these older recordings is not as good as my newer music, I did my best to remaster these vintage efforts to make them sound as good as possible. The pieces on ‘Today’, ‘Beyond’ and ‘Yesterday’ represent some of my life’s most rewarding musical moments and I certainly enjoyed bringing them into the world!
